What Is a Call to Action?

Your call-to-action is what you ask your reader to do once they’ve read your copy – which could be a blog post, sales page, email, or opt-in form.

It can be something as simple as calling you for more information, signing up for your mailing list or buying your product. If you don’t tell people what to do, they are less likely to do it.

Even if your copy implies they should buy your product, if you don’t ask for the sale, you won’t make it as often.

Every piece of copy should have a call-to-action; whether it’s a page on your website, your business card, or any other piece of copywriting.

Small business marketing tips: Your call-to-action is what you ask your reader to do once they've read your copy – which could be a blog post, sales page, email, or opt-in form.

Examples: Here are some examples of the types of calls-to-action you can make.

  • Click a link to place an order.
  • Share a blog post or graphic with their followers.
  • Call a 1-800 number to place an order.
  • Follow you on a social media platform.
  • Call a number to hear a recorded message.
  • Fill in a form to subscribe to a newsletter or get a free gift.
  • Click a link for more information.
  • Fill in a form to enter a sweepstakes.

The infographic includes plenty of wording you can borrow to create your calls-to-action.

Note that some are written as if you’re speaking to the reader, and others as if the reader is speaking back to you (such as saying “Yes please!” as they click the button to submit a form).

Exercise:

Take a look at every page of promotional material you’ve written. Ensure it has a call-to-action.

If it doesn’t, fix it. Don’t assume your reader will know what to do.

Great list however you should probably not be using the term “Click here…” on anything.

We don’t click on mobile (we tap, swipe, pinch, etc.). Likewise, how does one click when using SIRI or Google Voice? Or when using an assistive device for accessibility (quadriplegics, for example, may be using their eyes or tongue to access the Web).

Better to say “Get…,” “Access…,” “Download…” etc. Should be the exact verb but ‘click’ is a relic verb that needs to be retired.

It’s true that it’s not accurate, but I’m more interested in the fact that it works.
