How to Make Quote Images Online: 20+ EASY Ways

Updated on: June 13, 2023 by Louise Myers 113 Comments

Want to make quote images online, but not sure where to begin?

Picture quotes are wildly popular on Facebook, Pinterest, Instagram, Twitter – everywhere! People love to engage with quote images that speak to them.

I’ve researched the best sites to make your own quote graphics online.

Most are FREE, or at least offer a free version or trial. Try a couple out!

Let’s dive in so you can find your fave.

20+ EASY Ways to Make Picture Quotes Online!

Since I first published this list 10 years ago, a lot has changed. Some sites have gone offline, so I’ve eliminated them. Some hot sites have emerged, so I share details below. And more options have been added by readers.

Check out the expanded list, and choose what YOU need!

Note: I’m an affiliate for some tools I’ve tried and loved. This means I may make a referral fee if you upgrade to a paid version, at no cost to you.

Snappa Free Online Quote Maker

One of my favorite online design tools is Snappa! So I’ll share some shortcuts to creating great quote images with Snappa.

Head over to Snappa and log in.

On the home page, I recommend selecting Instagram post size.

Then scroll down until you see a design that resonates with you, that works for quote text.

snappa feed of instagram post templates.

Once you click on the template, use the Bkgrnd tab to do one of these:

  1. Search for a photo background.
  2. Choose a graphic pattern background.
  3. Upload your own pictures to write on.
  4. Choose a solid color background.

snappa work area shows where to search photos, patterns, colors, or upload your own.

To the right of the main Bkgrnd tab, you can also choose to add effects, text boxes, graphics, and shapes.

Tip: Upload your logo, or find previously uploaded graphics, under the Graphics tab 🙂

To change the quote or the font, simply click in that text box and make your adjustments.

Above I show the quote image with the original photo, quote, and font selected by Snappa. I merely changed the words in the oval to my website URL.

Easy peasy!

Once you’ve made one you like, just click the Duplicate button to create another variation – then keep going!

It’s that easy to write quotes on pictures online, free.

Below is my finished result with my own uploaded logo.

Try Snappa now to see what you can create!

Make Quote Pictures FREE with Canva

Canva does so much that it can be overwhelming.

But it doesn’t have to be!

To write a quote on picture fo’ free, just head over to Canva, and create or open your free account.

Now, don’t be overwhelmed by the million-and-one templates. Just type quote right into that search bar.

Voila! Your choices await.

Even a few sample templates, but I clicked the Motivational Quotes option to see more variety.

canva home page search bar and template options.

And for sure, there are lots of options. But if you’re going for free, avoid the dollar signs and crowns. Those will cost you, or require a Pro plan.

I chose the simple pink one. I switched to one of Canva’s gradient backgrounds and added my logo.

To make your own quotes with your own pictures, click that handy Uploads button on the left side, then click the purple Upload files button. This way you can make something really unique.

But here’s my quickie 2-minute version.

Quote Yourself with Missinglettr (for bloggers only!)

This is my favorite for sharing quotes from my blog.

If you’re a blogger, check this out! It’s unbelievably easy, because it’s automated.

Missinglettr automatically pulls in quotes from new blog posts and creates quote pictures and accompanying text, then schedules them to be posted over an entire year.

If you’re on a paid plan, you can edit the quote templates to match your branding! Here are two templates I’m using.

Missinglettr automatically pulls in quotes from new blog posts and creates quote pictures and accompanying text.

You can post to Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn. Over a year’s use, my automated posts from Missinglettr brought 20,000+ visits to my blog!

20 More EASY Ways to Make your own Picture Quotes Online

There’s still a huge assortment of sites that allow more or less customization. Less can mean faster and easier!

Most sites on my list are best for making quote pictures, plus a few are meme generators. Both have the potential for posts that go viral, so give ’em a try, if they suit your business brand.

The three I’ve recommended above are created for small business owners. Some on the list below may provide a less professional-looking result.

It may be OK to mix in memes once in awhile, but they may not be appropriate to your business. Proceed with caution.

I’ve included my own synopsis under each site’s name, which is a clickable link. As you try the sites, give them a “thumbs up” or “thumbs down” so others know which are best liked.

If you plan to create designs for your business, be sure to check the site’s Terms of Use to ensure it’s allowed. Learn more about graphic design apps ToU.

You can read an in-depth comparison of my favorite design tools in this post about design tools for non-designers. The six you’ll find there are all suited to business use.

Hi Louise, thanks so much for all the advice! I am pretty new to this so it is so really helpful. I am going to have a go at creating my own using the links you have included. At the risk of sounding like a real numpty :-0 I was trying to upload a quote from a site before I came across your article. I saved the picture quote to my pc and then uploaded in my FB business page, but the image was really small and it was hard to read the quote. I guess I am making a basic error here – any tips or is there simply no hope for me?? Thanks! Helen

      Hi Helen,
A few possibilities. Did you click on the picture on your wall, and it was still small? It could appear small on your wall if it was a tall image. Square or wide looks better on the wall.

Or maybe you saved a thumbnail of the image you created?

Or, maybe the site only lets you create tiny images? Which seems weird, but I guess it’s possible! You might have to pay for larger image downloads.

What site was it, and the shape of your image?

Hi Louse, wow, thanks for the speedy reply, much appreciated! I have looked and the image I saved was from a site where I needed to pay for the larger one – think I had got to the point where I couldn’t see the wood for the trees! Thanks for your help and I am much clearer now about what to do. I just tried one from ‘curated quotes’ and it worked fine :-). Next task is to create my own! Mind you I did see this as I was googling how to do it! nextshark.com/inspirational-quotes-facebook-stupid-people-study/ Really glad I came across your site and articles before that and I will be uploading quotes, just making sure that they are thought-provoking and not made up! ;-). Thanks again, Helen

I haven’t heard of anything. I’m not sure it’s even possible, as GIFs are “indexed color,” meaning they’re created based on the colors in the image. You can’t even add text to a GIF image in Photoshop unless the color already appears in the image, or you save it as a different file type first.

Unfortunately I can’t recommend this service. According to the “how it works” page, this program seems to encourage using any photo found on the web to make a meme. Unless stated otherwise, any image found should be presumed copyrighted by its creator. Using them for personal or business purposes could get you sued.

Great collection you have here, Louise! Share As Image is one of my favorites and I bought the Pro version back when it was still Pin A Quote. Quozio is the one I use a lot.

Have you heard of Chisel? It’s still in beta ( I signed up for it) and it might be worth checking out.

Hi Nica! I’ll check that out. The number of quote generators is growing rapidly! They’re a lot of fun.

This is just my second newsletter from you and I wanted to say thank you for the very useful, clear and non-cluttered information. I have used some of the tips from your first newsletter and will definitely use the ones from this one.
Looking forward to the next one!

I had no idea there were soooo many ways to create quoto-graphics and meme pics. There’s not a lot of that kind of thing done in my Paleo diet niche. This is great because now I can use these tools you taught me about to

    — create paleo diet food lists in pics
    — make paleo based memes … for bacon lovers, etc…
    — I won’t neglect making some Mark Sisson type primal diet images either.

Thanks again for these great tips,
and the opportunity to comment with some ideas I have ….

I hope others find your assistance as valuable as I do

Thanks Louise. The one I’ve been using is Quozio which I really like and it’s super easy. I didn’t realize there were so many. Awesome. I’ll have to give them a try.

I just discovered Quozio and I LOVE it! But it’s great to have other sites when you want to change things up a bit. Enjoy experimenting!
