How to Track Blog Traffic from Social Media Easily

Want to know how to track blog traffic from social media easily?

It’s important to know where your traffic is coming from, so you can do more of that!

For instance, even though I have over 6K Twitter followers, plus a tribe that tweets my content, I only got 295 visits from Twitter in August. So I need to limit my time there.

Pinterest, on the other hand… ? ? ?

It can be a little confusing to track this down, even if you already have Google Analytics installed on your site. But I’m gonna show you how to find it!

How to Setup Google Analytics in WordPress

First off, you really need to have Google Analytics on your site, so you can know:

  • Who visits your site
  • What they do on your site
  • When they visit your site
  • How they interact with your site content, and, most importantly to this lesson…
  • Where they arrived from

It’s not hard to sign up for a GA account. Then you can add it to your site with a bit of simple coding, or just copy and paste to a WP plug in.

Read how here on WPbeginner.com, or watch the video below.

That wasn’t too hard, but this is really easy.

Open your Google Analytics page here.

I recommend setting the dates for a one-month period. You can actually get stats for every month since you installed GA, but let’s start with the last full month.

Track your blog traffic for a one-month period by setting the dates at top right.

Now just click on Acquisition in the left column, and then Social.

If you click somewhere else, you may find that the stats from Pinterest, for example, are broken out by different countries. You don’t have to add all those separate numbers up! The aggregate numbers are right here, under Acquisition > Social > Overview.

Click on Acquisition in the left column, and then Social, to see the aggregate numbers from each social platform.

If you grabbed the awesome Social Media Planner, there’s a sheet to jot down this info, month by month. But you can create a spreadsheet, or any system you like, to keep track.

I highly recommend you visit your social sites around the last of the month, so you can make a note of your follower count. Most social sites only show your follower growth for the last 30 days.

You don’t have to be an analytics geek – it’s just fun to watch those numbers rise!

And if you are using that Planner to post consistently, I’d love to hear about your results – and possibly feature your testimonial!

    Hey Louise,

Wow, you get a ton of traffic from social! I have tried doing lots of social media sharing but I have not got as much engagement as you. Perhaps, I need to ask people to share like you do. I will share this too on our platforms.

    Thanks,
    Dennis

      Thanks for sharing, Dennis.

Since I wrote this, I had an exceptional month of traffic from Pinterest, with 839,987 sessions sent from Pinterest in 30 days. 99% due to one viral pin!

I noticed a similar trend while reviewing my GA earlier this week, Louise – top social media traffic driver is Pinterest and then Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn (in that order). What I find interesting is that till about a few months back, Facebook and Twitter were the top 2. Pinterest is definitely a medium for focus considering it works so well as a search engine too!

      Hi Vatsala!

Pinterest is amazing, as pins have such a long life. Add in search, and it’s awesome!
