Use Instagram Structure Tool to Add Amazing Detail to Photos

Instagram Structure Tool Adds Amazing Detail!

What’s Instagram Structure?

A new addition to Instagram’s palette of photo editing tools on iOS!

I’m a huge fan of photo editing in Instagram. This new tool is the icing on the cake!

Instagram structure tool at 100% provides a high definition effect. I toned it down though! Click the photo to see how I posted it on Instagram.

Added to the Android app on May 19, 2015, Instagram Structure tool was added to iOS a week later.

I picked up on it immediately, and have been happily using it to add detail and texture to many of my photos – at settings anywhere from 10 to 100.

You be the judge of what looks best – and, like the other editing tools, Structure isn’t of benefit to every photo.

But I add it to most of mine!

At a high setting, it adds an HDR (high definition) quality. If a super-real, dimensional quality fits your brand, give it a try!

On the other hand, if you go with a vintage, faded look, it mightn’t work for you.

You can do a lot of editing right in Instagram. It’s free and fast. You can even fix underexposed photos in Instagram without any additional apps.

Unfortunately Adobe doesn’t have anything close. At one point I figured out how to get a somewhat similar effect in Photoshop. If you play around you may come up with a formula. If you do, LMK!

Hey there! What a wonderful filter but I wonder how do I create a filter like this to be used in a mobile app similar to Instagram, as I’m developing one sample. I see some libraries out there dealing with sharpen effect, but didn’t get anything on structure. Any guidelines what to look for and/or where to look for?

Good luck, I haven’t seen this effect elsewhere.

    Hi Louise,
Special thanks for sharing such a valuable topic. I personally like Instagram. It has repeatedly proved to be a great tool for reaching out to users. Their platform provides more attention to ads than just about any other social networking app, and users use the app throughout the day.

      Hi Connor,
Try messing with the settings on Filter –> Unsharp Mask for similar effects.

Snapseed has a Structure adjustment under Details. I think you can get a similar effect in Photoshop with Unsharp Mask at a moderate radius setting.

As log as you’re OK with the square format, you can always turn your phone on Airplane Mode and edit in IG. It will save to your Camera Roll.

What is the difference between the lux effect (button that looks like the sun) and structure???

I believe Lux, Structure, and Sharpen work similarly, but on a different scale. They all add detail. Lux is on a large scale, Structure medium to small detail, and Sharpen for fine detail.

The easiest is to just play with them and see what looks good to you on an individual photo! I use them a ton, but can still be surprised at what works or doesn’t on a particular photo.
