Wondering the best image size for Threads?
Threads app is the latest brainchild of Meta, which owns Facebook and Instagram.
It’s certainly taken social media by storm, with 70 million downloads on its first day. Everyone seems to love it!
So some are asking about image sizes for Threads app.
Let’s find out!
Threads App: Use an Image – Or Not!
Threads app is kind of a mashup of Instagram and Twitter. Now that Twitter allows images! Yes, I remember when it was text only 😲
Threads app allows easy reposting (aka retweeting on Twitter). Instagram has no repost feature.
And you can’t post on Instagram unless you have a visual – a video, photo, or graphic.
But with Threads, the choice is yours.
And people are loving it. They don’t miss the ads and algorithms of Instagram, and the strident conversations on Twitter.
Who woulda thunk it?!?
Threads Image Sizes
If you choose to post a visual on Threads app, you have a lot of flexibility!
I’m seeing all shapes and sizes, from landscape to portrait.
Even tall phone-size screenshots, TikToks, or Reels can be shared on Threads! However, these will be reduced in width to fit the maximum image height.
The maximum image height on Threads is 1424 pixels.
Images taller than a 3:4 aspect ratio will be reduced in width to fit this image height.
The maximum image display size on Threads is 1070 pixels wide by 1424 pixels tall.
This 3:4 aspect ratio will give you the most visual impact, because it has the greatest number of pixels. See sample below.
But go ahead and post any size images you’d like!
Note: You can post larger sizes, but they’ll be reduced to be no taller than 1424 pixels, by my measurements on the iPhone app. Images can be pinched open to zoom in. Details hold when zoomed.
Once again, the choice is yours.
Just beware that at some point, users may be able to download your full-size images, as I warned with Instagram post sizes.
Link Images on Threads App
Yes, you can post links on Threads.
The standard link share image will be cropped to 2:1 aspect ratio on Threads.
This is a little bit wider than link share images on Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn. But the same images should work just fine on Threads.
You can also post any image and place a clickable link in the text caption.

It would be nice that Threads and Instagram were the same size and you could post in-between. Now I have the make 2 different size posts.

You don’t have to. Threads accepts pretty much any size image. Or no image at all! I’ve just noted what will give you the maximum pixel area: 3×4 format.
