Updated on: January 22, 2024 by Louise Myers Leave a Comment

Wondering if hashtags work on Threads?

Threads app boasted 100 million signups in its first 5 days, and many are still active.

Which has Threadheads asking, Do you use hashtags on Threads?

Let’s pin this down right now!

Do Hashtags Work on Threads in 2024?

Yes, hashtags now work on Threads. They appear without the hashtag symbol and are called tags.

A tag will appear in your thread caption as hyperlinked blue text.

The word or words will link to a feed of posts with the same tag, shown in reverse chronological order.

How to Add Hashtags to Threads

There are a few different ways to add tags to your threads.

1 | Hashtag button

The easiest way is to tap the hashtag button underneath where you type your content. This will bring up trending hashtags.

This method will only add a tag to the end of your post.

If you don’t want it at the end, only type up to the spot where you want it to appear. Then place your tag.

You can now add the rest of your text.

2 | Recently used tags

Once you’ve tagged a post, though, that tag will appear when you tap that hashtag button in the future.

This will be much more useful to most users than a few random trending tags.

3 | Hashtag on keyboard

The way to add a tag you haven’t used before is to find the hashtag character key on your device’s keyboard.

This is a bit trickier. On an iPhone, it takes two extra taps to get to the special characters keyboard.

Type the hash symbol, then the first few letters of your desired tag.

Once you start typing letters, the hashtag symbol disappears, and tags including the typed letters will appear in a popup.

Just tap on the one you want to add.

4 | Say “hashtag”

Who, me, type? I love dictating text whenever I can.

And at least on the iOS app, when you say “hashtag” while dictating your thread text, the hashtag symbol will appear.

From there, it works exactly as described above.

5 | From the tag feed

Another way is to go to the tag thread and tap into the box at the bottom. This will open up a new thread with that tag at the beginning.

6 | Crosspost with hashtags (untested)

I suspect that you can also cross post from Instagram with hashtags. My guess is that the first hashtag will become your tag for that thread.

I haven’t tested it. Have you?

How Many Hashtags on Threads?

You can only add one tag to a thread.

While that might seem limiting, it will probably avoid spamming like we’ve seen on some platforms like Pinterest.

It’ll also avoid a lot of confusion on numbers, like how many hashtags to use on Instagram or X (Twitter).

Should You Use Hashtags on Threads?

Even though hashtags on Threads have been out for more than a month, I see very few Threadheads currently using them.

But I don’t see any reason not to. They seem to play into Threads’ concept of creating conversation.

However, when I first tried to add a tag, the app crashed. I hope that was an isolated incident.
